240 EgyptAir pilots resign over low salaries

At least 240 EgyptAir pilots have handed in their resignation letters, in protest against the low salaries they receive and the planned pay rises to EgyptAir's top management, a measure considered unjust by the Egyptian Pilots Association.

Their syndicate said the pilots have never protested or voiced any demands, although the annual 5 percent EgyptAir salary increase, approved in 2005, has not been applied to them.

The syndicate considers the new remuneration scheme to be unfair, especially given that it was devised without consulting the pilots of the syndicate.

A source at the airport control room told Al-Masry Al-Youm that flights on Wednesday were delayed only by three minutes due to technical reasons, but no flights were cancelled or postponed due to the resignations.

Syndicate sources have confirmed all pilots will abide by the official working hours, and will not delay any flights.

According to Al-Masry Al-Youm, the State Council Administrative Court is scheduled to consider on Thursday a lawsuit filed by the Pilots Syndicate, aimed at reducing the working hours.

Syndicate President Ashraf Abdel Baki said the Civil Aviation Authority has assigned 14 flying hours for certain flights, which violates the Unified Labor Law No. 2 of 2003.
