3417 candidates apply for running in Egypt’s parliamentary elections

Some 3,417 candidates across the country applied over the past two days to run in the upcoming parliamentary elections, the High Elections Committee (HEC) said Thursday.

On Wednesday, about 672 people filed applications, upping number to 3,417 candidates, including 142 women.

HEC Spokesman Omar Marwan said controversial electoral symbols, like star and Suez Canal, were excluded.

Marwan has urged candidates to swiftly undergo needed medical checkups and submit their medical reports to the electoral committees in their governorates.

The deadline for applications is September 12, he said.

Parliamentary elections were previously scheduled to take place in March, but were suspended by the Supreme Constitutional Court due to the unconstitutionality of parliamentary laws.

Parliamentary elections will mark the third and final step of the road map, which was outlined on July 3, 2013, following the ouster of president Mohamed Morsi.
