Ain Shams University pledges to fire professors accused of harassment

Mohamed al-Toukhy, vice president of Ain Shams University, on Sunday said the administration will fire the three professors of the Faculty of Arts Hebrew department if they are found guilty of harassing female students.

Last week, media reports female students at the Hebrew Department at Ain Shams University who they said they had been subjected to sexual harassment in the department. They name three lecturers as the harassers, who they allege threatened them if they complained or revealed what had happened.

Gamil Abdel Baqy, the dean of the Faculty of Law, responsible for investigating the incident, said he would announce the results of his investigation by the end of this week.

Meanwhile, the university club, made up of university professors, called on the media not to report on the incident until investigations are completed.

Sexual harassment, many say, has been increasing in recent years. Women activists and reporters told of severe sexual harassment and assaults in Tahrir Square, the focal point of mass protests since the removal of former President Hosni Mubarak.

In 2008, a survey showed that nearly two-thirds of Egyptian men admit to having sexually harassed women in Egypt. However, no data is available on the prevalence of sexual harassment in the work place.
