Antiquities minister inaugurates Fayoum’s Kom Oshim Museum

The Antiquities Minister Khaled al-Anani has inaugurated the Koam Osheem Museum in Fayoum governorate after restoration work at the museum was concluded, according to Akhbar Al-Youm.

The event on Thursday was attended by Fayoum Governor Gamal Samy, a number of ambassadors to Egypt, Antiquities Ministry officials and heads of foreign archeological institutes.

The opening of the museum is part of the ministry's plan to develop and re-open museums that had closed, with a view to promoting domestic and international tourism, Anani said.

Elham Salah, head of the Museums Sector, said the Kom Aushim Museum contains 320 artifacts, some of which had been stored at the Egyptian Museum and Kom Oshim museums and will be displayed to the public for the first time.

The development of Kom Oshim Museum cost LE650,000, funded by the Antiquities Ministry, said Waadallah Aboulela, head of the ministry's projects sector.

According to Aboulela, the height of the museum's wall has been increased by three meters, guard towers were built, a new lighting system and surveillance cameras have been installed, and the façade of the museum has been repainted in new colors.

Ministry officials are currently coordinating with the Faculty of Tourism and Housing to organize cultural events and activities in the museum's open area, which will contribute to raising awareness of archaeological heritage among different age categories, Salah said.

Kom Oshim Museum is situated at the entrance to Karanis city in Fayoum. It was established in 1974 to tell the history of Fayoum governorate druing various eras. In 1993, a second floor was built to expand the museum, which was closed from 2006 to 2016 for restoration work.
