Baseera: 82% of Egyptians approve of Sisi’s performance in first 100 days

After 100 days in office, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi still enjoys wide public support, according to a new poll conducted by Baseera center.

The poll intends to measure the period known in politics as the “honeymoon phase” when elected officials often experience wide-spread support, which later dissipates as the public begins to hold the officials more responsible and become in turn more critical.

Maged Othman, head of the center, said the poll was conducted through landlines and mobile phones on a sample of 2009 citizens who were 18 years old and above from 17-19 September.

The poll showed almost 82 percent of Egyptians approve of Sisi's performance, while only 5 percent disapprove and 13 percent said they couldn’t decide.

More than the half of the poll respondents highly approve El-Sisi’s performance, 53 percent of them women and 63 percent men.

Supporters aged 50 years or more represented 72 percent, while youth ages 18 to 29 represented 41 percent. The percentage increased from 51 percent in Upper Egypt to 63 percent in Lower Egypt.

The same poll was conducted during the regime of former president Mohammed Morsy, which at the time showed a 78-percent public approval rating of his performance.

Sisi's approval rating, however, seems more polarized as double the respondents approved highly of the current president's performance while in office compared to Morsy. The percentage of those who highly approved Morsy’s performance after 100 days was 29 percent versus 49 percent who merely approved it. These percentages for Sisi were 58 percent and 24 percent respectively.

The respondents were asked if they would vote for Sisi if the presidential election were to be held tomorrow. Around 78 percent said they would vote for him, 8 percent said they would not vote for him and 14 percent said that this depends on the other candidates who will run against him.
