Brotherhood campaign urges citizens to vote for constitution

The Muslim Brotherhood's Guidance Bureau has instructed Freedom and Justice Party leaders to organize a door-to-door campaign urging citizens to vote for the draft that is expected to be put for referendum in December.

An informed Brotherhood source, who asked not to be named, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that Deputy Supreme Guide Khairat al-Shater had tasked the FJP's Vice Chairman, Essam al-Erian, and Cairo Secretary Mohamed al-Beltagy to lead the campaign in Cairo and Upper Egypt, while FJP board member Farid Ismail and former Brotherhood MP Azza al-Garf would oversee the initiative in Lower Egypt.

According to the source, the campaign’s motto, "Protect Your Constitution," was meant to convey the danger liberal groups pose to the first constitutional draft, issued last week.

The same source said the campaign had allocated more than 700,000 posters to post or give out to citizens, which will also include phone numbers so citizens can send their suggestions to the Constituent Assembly.

Shater had tasked junior Brotherhood members in provinces with intensifying their efforts to pass "an Islamist majority constitution," and to reach out to university students with seminars defending the current draft.

Ahmed Hendawy, the campaign's coordinator, said they had managed to obtain 50,000 signatures supporting the constitution, and are targeting 3 million "yes" votes in order to counter liberals' attempts to stonewall the current draft.
