Brotherhood: At least 70 pro-Morsy protesters killed in police crackdown

The Health Ministry has said that 20 people were killed and 177 others injured in clashes that broke out early on Saturday between protesters in Rabaa al-Adaweya and security forces.

Khaled al-Khateeb, head of the ministry's Central Unit for Urgent Care, told MENA that the dead bodies are all at the Health Insurance Hospital Morgue in Nasr City.

Clashes erupted between supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsy and security forces early on Saturday at the Unknown Soldier Monument on Nasr Road in Nasr City.

The field hospital in Rabaa al-Adaweya meanwhile had said earlier that 75 people had been killed and around 1,000 injured in those same clashes on Nasr Road.

According to the Muslim Brotherhood, Egyptian security forces shot dead at least 70 supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsy on Saturday, days after the army chief called for a popular mandate to tackle "violence and terrorism."

Brotherhood spokesman Gehad El-Haddad said the shooting started shortly before pre-dawn morning prayers on the fringes of a round-the-clock sit-in being staged by backers of Morsy, who was toppled by the army more than three weeks ago.

"They are not shooting to wound, they are shooting to kill," Haddad said. The death toll might be much higher, he said.
