Cairo University’s Faculty of Engineering dean, deputies resign, semester ends

Dean of Cairo University's Faculty of Engineering Sherif Murad and his deputies have submitted their resignations to University president Gaber Nassar.

Nassar postponed review of the resignations and instructed them to handle the issue according to law.

In a statement issued Wednesday, the university announced that first semester lectures would be ending Wednesday rather than continuing until final exams, which will start on the scheduled date of 28 December. It added that students will only be tested on what was actually covered in lectures and not the complete projected syllabus.

The university called on all of its members, including faculty members, students and employees, to stick to laws and regulations.

Resignations come after weeks of protests by faculty and students backing the Muslim Brotherhood and deposed president Mohamed Morsy. Earlier clashes left one engineering student, Mohamed Reda, dead.

Students have vowed to continue protesting until Reda's death is brought to justice.
