CAPMAS: 66 patents granted to Egyptians in 2014

A total of 2136 applications were submitted to the Egyptian patent office in 2014, including 752 presented by Egyptians, compared to 2,057 applications in 2013 (including 641 Egyptian ones), according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).
 
In a press release issued on Sunday on occasion of the World Intellectual Property Day, CAPMAS said that 415 patents were granted in 2014, 66 of which were given to Egyptians, compared to 465 patents in 2013 (86 issued to Egyptians).
 
13 percent of the 131 patents granted in chemistry and metals in were given to Egyptians in 2014, compared to a total of 28.2 percent out of 71 patents in the field of humanitarian aid and 4.8 percent out of 63 patents in education and transportation.
 
The Egyptian office granted 84 patents to the United States, 66 to Egypt and 34 to Germany. 
 
Also, 10,062 trademark applications were submitted by Egyptians in 2014, compared to 9,254 in 2013, marking an 8.7 percent increase.
 
In total, 6,095 trademarks were granted to applicants in 2014, compared to 4,471 in 2013, according to the press release.
 
Egyptian applicants received 4,300 trademarks (70.5 percent of the total amont granted), United States was granted 563 trademarks (9.2 percent), whereas 135 were issued to UK appkicants (2.2 percent).
