Clashes in Fayoum university as White Knights, Brotherhood students protest match massacre

Police forces clashed with students at Fayoum University on Monday following a protest condemning fatal clashes outside a football stadium on Sunday that left 22 dead.

Students, reportedly affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, were joined by members of the White Knights (WK), the Zamalek Sports Club fan group. The protesters blocked traffic outside the university and chanted anti-police and army slogans.

Police responded with tear gas which forced the students back onto the campus. Several protesters choked by the gas were taken to the hospital.

The protest was condemning the death of WK members outside the Air Defense Stadium in Cairo late Sunday before the team’s premier league match with ENPPI.

While the Interior Ministry blamed the deaths on a stampede, the WK accused police of causing the deaths with their use of tear gas.
