Court upholds disbanding of Al-Ahly Club’s board

The Cairo Administrative Court on Sunday upheld a December verdict calling for disbanding the board of Al-Ahly Club, Egypt’s biggest sports club, over flaws in the elections that brought the board to power in March 2014.

The court has turned down a challenge by club chief Mahmoud Taher.

Legal sources said the upholding of the verdict obliges the Youth and Sports Ministry to proceed with procedures leading to the dissolution of the club’s board based on the first verdict.

But the club’s legal official, Yahia Abdel Meguid, said any interference by the ministry will be “considered by FIFA as a government intervention in Egyptian football affairs."

Hamdi Atris, the lawyer who brought the case challenging the club’s elections, dismissed the suggestion, adding that the ministry had previously disbanded the club’s board in January 2014 before the Cabinet later rescinded the decision.
