Custody extended for policemen accused of rape

The Sahel Misdemeanor Court extended by 15 days the custody detention of two police deputies accused of raping a university student inside their police vehicle.

Investigators had found that the pair forcibly raped the girl after they had allegedly found her making out with a friend inside his car. They forced her out of the car, carried her into their vehicle before committing their crime.

Investigators added that the victim suffered a shock following the assault, but managed to SMS her friend who approached a nearby police officer and informed him of the incident, consequently leading to the arrest of the suspects who denied the charges.

In a November report, the National Council for Human Rights said Egypt has the world’s second highest rate of physical and verbal harassment of women after Afghanistan. The report added that 64 percent of Egyptian women are subject to harassment.

The United Nations office in Cairo expressed in June its concern over the surge in harassment cases in Egypt.
