Defendants in Duweiqa rockslide case handed one-year suspended sentence

The Court of Cassation sentenced Tuesday the defendants in the case known in the media as the "Duweiqa  rockslide" case to a one-year suspended sentence.

The Gamaleya District Misdemeanor Court sentenced each of Major General Mohamed Ahmed, head of Manshiet Nasser neighborhood, Engineer Hamada Abdel Fatta, and Mamdouh Saad, director of housing in the area, Engineer Abdel Azim Mabrouk, and Samy Saeed, the official responsible for rocks file in Manshiet Nasser, to five years in prison over involuntary manslaughter in September 2008.

One hundred and nineteen residents were killed and 55 others were injured in Manshiet Nasser in 2008 when rocks broke off from the surrounding cliffs and fell onto their houses.

The defendants appealed the sentence and the Court of Cassation ordered a retrial, before upholding today's ruling.
