Detained opposition figure refuses to pay LE50,000 bail

The Supreme State Security Prosecution approved the release of former MP Hamdy al-Fakhrany on LE50,000 bail, pending an investigation over his alleged involvement in violent clashes in Gharbiya Governorate's Mahalla city. The clashes began on the second anniversary of the 25 January revolution.

Fakhrany’s attorney, Hafez Abu Saada, who is also head of the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights, said his client is refusing to pay the fee and will remain in detainment for 15 days.

“It is indeed a huge and unjustified amount,” Saada tweeted.

Security forces took Fakhrany into custody on Tuesday after Prosecutor General Talaat Abdullah issued an arrest warrant against several activists.

Numerous complaints had been submitted to the prosecutor general's office in the last four days, accusing activists of vandalizing public property and inciting violence and chaos.

The accusations are widely considered politically motivated.
