DNA-based technology detects meat, dairy fraud

Researchers at the City of Scientific Research and Technological Applications in Alexandria have developed a new way of detecting fraud in meat and dairy products: by using DNA.
 
The institution’s director, Essam Khamis, said in press statements Sunday that the scientific city has been working on a means of exposing commercial fraud, especially in meat products. This initiative was propelled by a recent public outcry concerning rumors that donkey meat was being served at famous restaurants.
 
Dr. Salah Mahmoud, head of the city’s DNA research department, said the new genetically-based method relies on exploring the type of meat and dairy product using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology.
