E-waste to be recycled

Environment Minister Khaled Fahmy said there is a protocol with the Communications Ministry as to how to get rid of e-waste, such as disposed mobile phones and laptops, and how to recycle it, stressing that random disposal of e-waste is hazardous.

Electronic waste in Egypt amounts to 50,000 tons per year, 90 percent of which is not recycled or utilized properly.

The waste is often thrown in with other garbage, making its way to dumps. The metals in the circuitry and wiring eventually leak out and poison the surrounding environment.

Fahmy suggested the metals and other materials in e-waste be separated and repurposed. “It can be used as thermal energy in certain factories,” he said, though no such plans were revealed.

Currently, the company RecycloBekia is working to make a niche in the industry of recycling electric waste.
