Education minister: 10,000 new schools needed

Egypt's education system is in need of 10,000 new schools, according to Education Minister Mahmoud Aboul Nasr, in order to make room for around 18.5 million students.

The project, which aims to bring Egypt's total number of schools to approximately 58,000, has slowed due to a dearth of fundings.

Around LE50 billion is required for the new schools to be built and opened, the minister said, as well as for acquiring land for new educational establishments.

Committees have already been formed tasked with solving problems of over-populated classrooms, Aboul Nasr added.

The building of new schools in Egypt will be carried out with the help of NGOs, business leaders and the Association of Private School Owners, the minister revealed.
