Egypt and Sudan to discuss Renaissance Dam with Ethiopia

Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammed Amr on Tuesday met with his Sudanese counterpart, Salah El-Din Wansi, in Khartoum and briefed him on his talks with Ethiopia, especially regarding the agreement reached to immediately implement the recommendations made by the International Experts Committee concerning the technical specifications of the Renaissance Dam.

Amr and Wansi agreed to call for a meeting between each of the three countries' respective Ministers in charge of water resources in order to implement the recommendations.

Amr is also meeting with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir before his departure for Cairo Tuesday afternoon.

Amr had visited Addis Ababa on Monday. The visit was the first by a high-level Egyptian official since the diplomatic crisis broke out last month when Ethiopia announced that it was starting to build the dam, which Egypt fears will adversely affect its share of Nile water.

The negotiations with his Ethiopian counterpart were deemed by diplomatic sources in East Africa to have achieved relative progress, especially in regards to their agreement in principle to form a political and technical committee to discuss the dam.
