Egypt, Ethiopia approve join commission to run mutual cooperation

Egypt's president  and Ethiopia's prime minister agreed on Thursday to form a higher commission that handles mutual relations in all aspects.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shokry, and his Ethiopian counterpart Tedros Adhanom, said in statements on Thursday at the sidelines of the African Union Summit in Guinea, that both countries had agreed to “start a new chapter in mutual relations and regional cooperation.”

Both sides agreed to convene the commission, operating under direct presidential supervision, within three months.

According to the statement, both states agreed on the vitality of the Nile river for both sides, necessity to respect international law, confronting water shortages, anxiousness to avoid any damage to Egypt’s water rights and commitment to results of joint studies conducted around the controversial Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

Relations between Cairo and Addis Ababa have soured over the past few years since Ethiopia declared the construction of the dam on one of the Nile’s tributaries. Egypt argues the undertaking will affect the flow of the water to its population.
