Egypt’s mobile subscribers down 1.1 million in Sep

The number of mobile phone subscribers in Egypt fell on a monthly basis by 1.12 percent to 1.08 million users in September, according to the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) report issued on Thursday.

The number of mobile phone users reached to 94.76 million at the end of September, compared with 97.47 million in the end of September 2013, the report showed.

This brings the mobile penetration rate in the country to some 110.76 percent, compared to nearly 116.09 percent a year earlier.

NTRA has announced recently the cancellation of more than 5.5 million mobile lines for users who were unregistered or whose names and details were incomplete, and are now out of service.

This cancellation came due to rising security concerns of the state after that wave of militant attacks that followed overthrow of former President Mohamed Morsy on 3 July 2013.

Some people have more than one mobile phone, and the number also includes foreigners residing in Egypt.

Meanwhile, the number of Internet subscribers rose by 0.45 percent in September to 46.5 million from 46.29 million in August.

The annual growth rate of Internet subscribers soared by 25.2 percent compared to nearly 37.14 million users a year earlier.

The Internet penetration rate in the country reached to 54.35 percent, compared to nearly 44.23 percent a year earlier.
