Egypt’s population reaches 91 million: CAPMAS

Egypt’s population reached 91 million on Sunday, rising by one million in only six months since December 2015, the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) said.

"Continued population growth on the current rates significantly limits and affects the efforts to achieve tangible progress in living standards," CAPMAS said in a statement on Sunday.

Greater Cairo came first as the highest populated governorate at 9.51 million inhabitants, followed by Giza with 7.84 million, then Sharqiya with 6.7 million, meanwhile South Sinai came last with an estimated 171 thousand inhabitants.

A 2.4 percent population growth rate was registered in 2015; twice as high as the growth rate in other developing countries and five times higher than the rate in developed countries, the agency added.

Egypt’s population is expected to reach 92 million in November, and nearly 100 million including Egyptian expatriates.

Only 7.7 per cent of Egypt's land is populated.
