Experts: Renaissance Dam negotiations at risk, goodwill won’t solve differences

Meghawri Shehata, an international expert in water resources and the former president of Monufiya University, has said that negotiations between Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia on the Renaissance Dam are at risk.

“If the technical delegations do not reach a decision in accordance with the framework agreement signed by the leaders of the three countries, then those leaders must meet to solve the matter because goodwill won’t solve anything, and because Ethiopia never complied with any issues related to the Nile water,” he said.

Meanwhile, Hani Raslan of the Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies, said Ethiopia would have full control of the water if negotiations fail.

“The current negotiations are a flop and the Egyptian Irrigation Minister, Hossam Moghazy, is responsible for that,” he said, accusing Moghazy of giving false information and estimates that only serve the Ethiopian side.

“He should not be negotiating on behalf of Egypt,” he said. “He should be dismissed because he is betraying the responsibility of a very important and sensitive issue.”
