Health Ministry: One killed in Gharbiya protests

An unidentified man was killed and 28 others were injured during clashes Friday in the cities of Mahalla and Santa in Gharbiya Governorate.

State-run news agency MENA quoted an official at the Health Ministry as saying that the person who died was hit by a car while trying to avoid tear gas after security forces and Muslim Brotherhood supporters clashed with protesters opposing President Mohamed Morsy.

Meanwhile, calm returned to the areas around the Mahalla City Council, Shon Square and the city's second police station after clashes raged Friday and into the early morning hours of Saturday.

Friday protests in the city witnessed attempts to storm the Mahalla City Council building and a police station as protesters threw stones and Molotov cocktails. A number of cars and buses were also damaged, and trains were also delayed as a result of clashes. Protesters abandoned Shon Square after security forces fired heavy amounts of tear gas.

The protests drew thousands, most of whom were demonstrating against the president and the Muslim Brotherhood.

More than 60 people have been killed in clashes and protests since the second anniversary of the 25 January revolution, marking the worst bloodshed since Morsy assumed office in June 2012.
