Hurghada welcomed 8,000 tourists Saturday

Hurghada International Airport received 8,000 European tourists on board 60 separate flights on Saturday.

German tourists accounted for the largest number of visitors, arriving on 25 flights, followed by Denmark, Norway, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Poland and the Netherlands, airport director Sadeq al-Shoura said.

The airport implemented tight security measures, which included shoe stripping and individual searches, a part of a broader strategy to toughen travel security since the fatal crash of a Russian airliner late October near Sharm el-Sheikh. The downing of the plane is suspected of being the result of a terrorist operation.

Egypt’s tourism authorities said two weeks ago that the country received nine million tourists in 2015, down from a previously predicted 17 million.
