I will not allow a military coup, says Morsy

The Freedom and Justice Party’s presidential candidate Mohamed Morsy “will not allow” a military coup should he win the runoff election, he told Al Jazeera on Wednesday. The military is an arm of the executive branch reporting to the president, he added.

Regarding his rival Ahmed Shafiq’s chances of winning the presidential race, Morsy said that Egyptian expatriates have already voted for the FJP’s candidate. “There should be no talk about anything else but my Renaissance Project,” he said.

“No true Egyptian wants the recreation of the former regime,” Morsy said, adding that he would share responsibility with all other political forces. “No single party can bear it alone,” he stated.

Morsy was not clear if he would appoint a prime minister from outside the Muslim Brotherhood.

“The parliamentary experience was short and distorted by media. And Parliament has no executive power,” he said. “That is why I am running for president.”

He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to Sharia. “It has been in practice since the 1923 Constitution,” he said.
