Interior Ministry denies arrest of Italian student before death

The Interior Ministry’s Security Information Center has denied reports by media outles that claim it had arrested Italian student Giulio Regeni before he was found dead.

An Italian security team investigating the issue in Egypt said the news had been reported in an Italian newspaper and taken from western newspapers.

The ministry said the western newspapers published incorrect information regarding the circumstances of his disappearance and that an investigation team has been tasked with revealing the circumstances of his killing in collaboration with Italy. The outcome of these efforts will be revealed once all information is confirmed.

Regeni, 28, was researching independent trade unions in Egypt and had written articles critical of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's government — prompting speculation that he was killed at the hands of Egypt's security forces.

Interior and foreign ministers both dismissed the notion of security forces being behind Regeni's murder.
