Interior Ministry: Founder of militant group killed in Egypt’s Giza

Egypt's ministry of interior announced killing the founder of Ajnad Misr militant group on Sunday after identifying his location in an apartment in a Giza suburb.

The suspected militant was one of the leading members of the Sinai-based militant group Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis, before splitting from it in 2013 and forming another militant group called Ajnad Misr, the ministry said in a statement.

Ajnad Misr has claimed responsibility for a number of bombings and attacks in different parts of Egypt, including the capital. The alleged militant leader was wanted for involvement in attacks targeting security personnel in 26 incidents, according to the statement.

Civilian lives have also been claimed in a number of these incidents.

Bombings and shootings targeting security forces have surged since the military ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Mursi in July 2013 following mass protests against his rule.
