Iranian FM: Ahmadinejad to visit Cairo next month

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will visit Egypt next month, accepting President Mohamed Morsy's invitation to take part in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation summit.

Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said Ahmadinejad would arrive in Egypt on 6 February to deliver a speech during the summit, which runs from 2–7 February. He also plans to meet several leaders of the participating states, according to the Iranian Fars news agency.

The trip aims to improve bilateral ties, Salehi said during a press conference Tuesday.

Ahmadinejad’s visit to Egypt is the first by an Iranian head of state while in office in 30 years. Egypt and Iran broke diplomatic ties in 1979 over the outbreak of Iran's Islamic revolution and Egypt's peace treaty with Israel.

Since Morsy's election last year, the two states have signaled they are working to restore ties.

Morsy participated in the Non-Aligned Movement summit on 30 August in Tehran.
