Islamist figures accused of torturing a protester

A group of members and supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood were referred on Wednesday to the Criminal Court on charges of capturing, detaining and sexually abusing a protester, as well as torturing him with electric shocks inside a company headquarters in Tahrir Square.

The defendants are Osama Yassin (Former Youth Minister), Mahmoud al-Khodeiry (former head of the legislative committee in the dissolved People’s Assembly), Ahmed Mansour (Al Jazeera channel presenter), Amr Zaki, Hazem Farouq and Mohsen Rady, former members of the dissolved parliament. Mohamed El-Beltagy and Safwat Hegazy also face the same charges.

Osama Kamal, lawyer, said he was in Tahrir Square participating in the peaceful protests following the January 2011 revolution, when he was stopped at the entrance and asked for his national ID. When he was unable to show his ID which was not with him at the time, the defendants allegedly accused him of being a National Security officer and held him hostage for three days.

A reporter who watched and filmed the incident presented videos of it. In addition to the testimony of eyewitnesses, the videos allege the involvement of the defendants in the incident.
