JODHR warns against significant increase of crayfish in Nile

Justice Organization for Development and Human Rights (JODHR) has warned against crayfish invasion to governorates of Upper Egypt, Delta, Fayyoum, Beni Suef, Aswan and Qena.

In a recent research, the organization said that crayfish, brought from the United States to a fish farm, leaked to the Nile river in 2008 reaching to canals and drainage due to its ability to dig for 1.5 meters, according to the researchers.

In a statement on Saturday, JODHR, said that the black and red crayfish in the Nile threatens extinction of fisheries, as they feed on fish seed, which has led to reduced fish in the river over the past few years.

Crayfish, according to the organization, are causing huge losses for sailors, demolition of dozens of houses on the strip of Nile in Qena, Naga Hammadi and Aswan for its ability to dig.

The organization indicated the significant annual increase of crayfish in the Nile, warning against absence of action by ministries of agriculture and environment.
