Kerry to Congress: Egypt is committed to our strategic relations

US Secretary of State John Kerry told Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy in a telephone call on Wednesday that he assured Congress that Egypt is committed to strategic relations with the United States, particularly in regards to threats of terrorism and the Camp David Peace Accord.

Kerry also said that he is still unable to verify if Egypt is taking serious steps towards a democratic transition.

He called for fair and transparent elections, as well as an ease on restrictions on freedom of expression, assembly and the media.

The two officials had talked three times in the past few days to discuss bilateral relations, trade and the aid program.

This also comes just a few days before Fahmy’s visit to Washington to meet with Congress and US media.

The United States is set to return 10 Apache helicopters that have been suspended since last October.
