Law firm submits bill against torture to Sisi, contributors interrogated

The United Group Law Firm has submitted a draft law against the use of torture and cruelty to President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, asking the law to be applied as soon as possible.

Two of the contributing judges on the committee that composed the bill have now been referred to interrogations by the Supreme Judicial Council, the firm said in a statement.

The firm explained the bill was also prepared by a university professor, three lawyers and activists in the field of human rights. The bill includes mechanisms to reduce the negative effects of torture, through fair compensation to victims and the prosecution of criminals.

The statement said the firm has been working on the issue of torture for three years and has helped 500 victims.

The issuance of this law would give a clear signal that there is a political will to confront torture, which is an internationally-recognized crime, the firm added
