LE136 million to install energy-saving lampposts

Finance Minister Hani Qadri Demian said he has allocated LE136 million for the Ministry of Local Development to start installing energy-saving lampposts in all governorates. The project will take 28 months to complete, and will cost LE2 billion.

The minister said the current allocation will help complete the first out of six phases of the project, with one million out of four million lampposts.

He said the new system will reduce the load on the national grid, decreasing the frequency of power outages.

For his part, Ahmed Othman from the Ministry of Local Development said the project is part of a general policy to reduce government expenditure. “The cost of a megawatt of electricity obained from conventional sources is one million dollars,” he explained. “This is a burden for the state budget.”

He said the lighting of the streets will never go out under the new system, helping to reduce the frequency of road accidents, 80 percent of which take place at night.
