Major project to document monuments, promote tourism: minister

Antiquities Minister Khaled al-Anany has said that the ministry is focusing on neglected archaeological sites to be put on the tourist map, adding that the ministry depends on self-efforts in restoration.

The first, yet biggest, project to document Egyptian antiquities is being launched, he said.

An accurate database is being prepared, in cooperation with the Telecommunications Ministry, to promote all of the archaeological sites, promote tourism and resume the renewal of regional museums.

The minister visited Tal Atreeb archaeological area in Banha, Tal al-Yahudiya in Shebin al-Qanater and the archaeological relics stores in al-Shoubak in Qalyubia on Sunday.

He said the Ministry is working on the establishment of an archaeological site in Qalyubia to include the contents of Tal al-Yahudiya and Tal Atreeb; in addition to carrying out educational and service projects in the governorate.

Recently, there has been coordination with the governorate to provide a suitable site to display artifacts from the area, in return for a transfer of land owned by the ministry to the governorate, he said.

There are 200 archaeological missions currently working in Egypt in all fields of restoration and excavation.

The minister indicated mulling the erection of high fences at all archaeological sites to protect them against robbery, adding that most archeological sites in the Delta have no walls to help prevent robberies.
