Militant suspect Habbara declines to sign appeal over death sentences

A defense lawyer for accused militant Adel Habbara said that his client declines to sign a challenge to the Court of Cassation over two death sentences issued against him.

Nabawi Ibrahim said in a press statement that Habbara is reluctant to sign an appeal against a death sentence he received in November for his involvement in a bloody attack against police forces in Rafah, North Sinai, in August 2013, which left 25 dead.

Ibrahim said a grace period of 14 days for submitting the appeal was still in place.

Habbara was also handed a death sentence in early December for murdering a police officer in Sharqiya in 2012. He has 34 days to file a challenge to that verdict.

He is also facing a third death sentence for instigating violence against police, which he received in January 2014.

His lawyer said that if Habbara insists on his stance, the prosecution services will have to file the challenge themselves.
