Military council to criminalize bribery and violence in elections

Within a few days the ruling military council will issue a decree, already approved by the cabinet, criminalizing bribery and violence in the upcoming parliamentary elections, Local Development Minister Mohamed Ahmed Attiya has said.

“The decree issues a penalty of up to 15 years in prison for resorting to acts of thuggery in the elections,” Attiya explained.

He also said the ministry has received governors' nominations for the supervisors to administer the elections, which are slated to start in November.

Lastly, he said the ministry will set up operation rooms to monitor the elections 24 hours a day.
