NGO alliance detects remarkable drop in violence

An alliance of NGOs originally formed to detect the rates of violence during the buildup for parliamentary elections before their postponement in March has said that violence rates dropped remarkably last week.

The Parliamentary Elections Observatory has said that the period from 17 to 23 July to had witnessed 30 incidents of violence, compared to 63 during the preceding week, a drop of 53 percent.

It said, however, that violence targeting police and army forces still makes up the majority of incidents, with 20 assaults out of the total 30, a percentage of 67.

The NGO coalition includes the Global Network for Rights and Development – GNRD (Norway) and the International Institute for Peace, Justice and Human Rights – IIPJHR (Switzerland), along with a number of local partners, including MAAT for Peace, Development and Human Rights.
