Orphanage owner fined, sentenced to prison over beating children

Omraneya Misdemeanor Court sentenced on Wednesday the defendant accused of beating orphans to two years in prison with labor and fined him LE1,000 for beating the children and another LE1,000 for violating the Child’s Law and forcing them to work inside the association.

Prosecution earlier referred Makkah al-Mokarramah Orphanage owner Ossama Othman to Talbiya Misdemeanor Court over accusations of beating seven of the orphans and endangering their lives.

Prosecution faced the defendant with testimonies of six children, who said that he used to beat them every day for turning the TV on, though Othman denied the charges.

The defendant was arrested in August. Giza Governor Ali Abdel Rahman ordered to dissolve the orphanage board and appoint a temporary board for three months until a new board is elected, after a video showing the manager violently beating the children with a plank of wood, kicking, hitting and insulting them went viral on social media platforms, triggering angry reactions among Internet users.
