Thousands of Port Said residents throughout the city protested Saturday’s verdict in the stadium violence case, after a court upheld death sentences for 21 people, mostly city residents.

About 2,000 protesters blocked ferries headed from Port Said to Port Fouad, while burning tires. Later, the military convinced protesters to open the route.

The main routes of international ships going through the Suez Canal remained unaffected, especially after the navy reinforced its presence throughout the canal after the protesters stopped the ferries.

Port Said Criminal Court also acquitted 28 defendants and sentenced five others to life in prison on charges related to the killing of 72 football fans last year. Masry team fans had stormed the pitch after a game with Cairo-based Ahly team, attacking the opposing club’s fans.
