PM forms committee on sexual harassment phenomenon

Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb made a decision on Wednesday ordering the formation of a committee to look into the reasons of the spread of the sexual harassment phenomenon.

According to the decision, the committee will be headed by Mehleb with membership including the ministers of tourism, interior affairs, local development, religious endowments, education, youth and sports, health, social solidarity, culture, higher education and justice.

Members will also include representatives from Azhar, Coptic Church, the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood and the National Council for Women.

Tourism Minister Hesham Zaazou met last week with representatives of the tourism police, antiquities police and others during which he stressed the negative effect of sexual harassment on tourism in Egypt due to the increasing cases of harassment.

Zaazou proposed issuing several ministerial decisions to areas in question like hotels including admonish, then issuing a warning and then canceling the license in case of frequent accidents. The decisions also include awareness sessions for workers on dealing with tourists.

Tourism chambers were also decided to handle sorting the real harassment cases and others that only seek compensation. The tourist agent should also investigate tourist claims and take legal measures in case of accidents.
