Police agent commits suicide following Brotherhood links probe

A police agent has reportedly committed suicide in Port Said after having been repeatedly interrogated over his alleged connection with the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood.

The 35-year-old officer was part of the police force deployed for securing Egypt’s Suez Canal, Port Said police authorities said, adding that he shot himself with his gun at a rest house.

His colleagues were quoted as saying that he had experienced severe psychological pressure during the interrogations.

Egypt branded the Brotherhood a terrorist group in late 2013, months after the ouster of former Egyptian president and group leader Mohamed Morsi. Authorities blame the group for several bombings and shootings that have killed hundreds of police and army troops across the country since 2013.
