Qatari Armed Forces’ Chief of Staff arrives in Cairo over joint Arab troops talks

Qatari Armed Forces' Chief of Staff Major General Ghanem bin Shahin arrived in Cairo on Wednesday to take part in talks with the Arab League over the formation of a joint Arab troop unit, as per the decision taken during the recent Arab summit held in Sharm el-Sheikh.

A meeting for chiefs of staff of Arab armed forces took place on Wednesday at the Arab League's secretariat in Cairo. It’s headed by Mahmoud Hegazy, the Egyptian chief of staff of the Armed Forces, given that Egypt is the current head of the Arab summit.

The Qatari figure was received by the Qatari ambassador to Egypt, Seif bin Moqaddem.

In March, the summit called on Arab League Chief Nabil al-Araby to coordinate with Egypt and invite a committee of military experts under the supervision of the chiefs of staff of the Arab armed forces to meet and tackle the specifics of forming a unit which will face challenges that threaten the security and safety of the member states.

The necessary measures, mechanisms and budget required to form the joint troop unit are scheduled to be discussed. The outcome of the meeting will be reviewed by Arab heads of states in a committee that includes Egypt (the current head), Kuwait (the former chief) and Morocco (the coming chief) within four months
