Renaissance Dam evaluation meeting starts Monday

Renaissance Dam evaluation talks will start on Monday between Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia to discuss Egyptian fears of the project, as well as the proposals to bridge the gap between Cairo and Addis Ababa.

Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Hossam Moghazy said the meetings will be held over four sessions. The first session will include welcoming words from the three countries' water ministers. The second session will include the Egyptian view on the issues of conflict between Egypt and Ethiopia over the project, in addition to incidents that occurred while negotiations had stopped for eight months in row.

"Egypt has fears about the capacity of the Dam, periods of filling and discharging, as well as safety levels of the Dam," he added.

Sources taking part in the meetings said that the safety level of the Dam shows signs of danger on Sudan and Egypt, especially Sudan which could flood if the Dam collapses.

The kind of soil in the project is fragile and needs higher costs to inject all the areas of the Dam and the main lake located in front of the Dam, according to reports by the international committee that is evaluatiing the Dam.
