Revolutionary front calls for iftar in front of Israeli ambassador’s home

The Free Front for Peaceful Change called for a collective iftar banquet to be held in front of the Israeli ambassador’s home in the Maadi neighborhood of Cairo on Monday under the title "Leave."

The iftar is part of a plan to pressure the cabinet and the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) to expel the Israeli ambassador after six Egyptian military and security personnel were killed by Israeli forces in Sinai this week, read a statement issued by the group.

The statement added that the SCAF is adopting a passive stance vis-a-vis the demands of political powers regarding Israel.

Commenting the SCAF's position, Essam al-Sherif, the general coordinator for the front, said, "That is why we emphasize our demand that the SCAF hand over power to a civilian authority in order to do its job of securing our borders."

Meanwhile, hundreds of protesters staged a sit-in in front of the Israeli Embassy in Dokki to call for the expulsion of the ambassador, halting of natural gas exports to Israel and review of Egypt’s peace treaty with Israel.

Yesterday, a statement on the cabinet's official website claimed that Egypt had recalled its ambassador from Israel. After a few hours, the statement was taken down and dismissed by the government as a draft published by mistake.
