Sabbahi backers: campaigning period too short

The presidential campaign of Popular Current founder Hamdeen Sabbahi complained Sunday of the short campaigning period allocated by the Presidential Elections Commission for the elections slated for 26 and 27 May.

Sabbahi, who ranked third in the 2012 contest that brought deposed president Mohamed Morsy to office, is currently the only outstanding contender facing former defense minister Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who resigned last week and is widely expected to win the post and enjoys vehement backing from several media outlets.

The 21 days devoted to the campaigning activities is a very short period considering that candidates are required to promote themselves across 27 provinces, the campaign said, adding that the fact means that campaigning would not exceed one day in a given province.

It also noted that according to the PEC schedule, campaigns targeting Egyptians abroad would not last for more than 12 days, which the campaign said does not ensure effective publicity.

In a press conference Sunday, the PEC said results of the first round of elections would be announced by no later than 5 June.

Runoffs will take place on 16 and 17 June. Results will be declared on 26 June maximum, the commission added.
