Second increase in electricity prices to take place in July

The Electricity Ministry will apply new electricity prices for the 2015-2016 fiscal year in July.

Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb issued a decision last July on the gradual increase of electricity prices over a period of five years, ending in 2019.

The decision divides consumers into two tranches:

The first one involves low-income consumers, who use up to 100 kilowatts. This tranche is divided into two categories. The first category is the consumption of 1-50 kilowatts, which will have an increase in prices from 7.5 to 9 piasters per kilowatt, marking a 20 percent increase. The second section involves the consumption of between 50 and 100 kilowatts. This section will pay 17 piasters per kilowatt, marking a 17.2 percent increase.

The second category includes consumers of  between 101 and 200 kilowatts. One kilowatt will cost 20 piasters, marking a 25 percent increase, while between 201 and 350 kilowatt of consumption, each kilowatt will cost 29 piasters, marking a 20.8 percent increase. One kilowatt of consumption in the 351 to 650 kilowatt range will cost 39 piasters, which is a 14.7 percent increase. Between a 651 to 1,000 kilowatt consumption, each kilowatt will cost 68 piasters, which is a 13 percent increase.

The consumption of more than 1,000 kilowatts will cost 78 piasters per kilowatt, marking a 5 percent increase.

Trade stores are also divided into two tranches. One to 100 kilowatts will cost 32 piasters per kilowatt, while 101 to 250 kilowatts will cost 50 piasters per kilowatt. Between a 251 to 600 kilowatt consumption range, each kilowatt will cost 61 piasters, while the consumption of between 601 to 1,000 kilowatts will cost 81 piasters per kilowatt. The consumption of more than 1,000 kilowatts will cost 86 piasters per kilowatt.
