Senior UN officials in Cairo for Gaza ceasefire talks

A senior United Nations representative arrived in Cairo on Wednesday to take part in Palestinian-Israeli negotiations under Egypt's sponsorship.

Robert Serry, the UN envoy, said the aim of the visit is to seek a ceasefire in Gaza. Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, the Quartet's Middle East envoy, is scheduled to arrive later for the same purpose.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Elias Jaua will also pay a short visit to Egypt to meet with his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry.

The London-based Al-Sharq Al-Awsat newspaper said on Wednesday that Egypt said it was ready to manage the Rafah border crossing.

Senior Egyptian officials added that Cairo informed the Palestinian delegation that any talks about the crossing should take place between the Egyptian administration and the official representative of the Palestinian state, namely President Mahmoud Abbas.

Sources added that operating any border should take place between two countries, not a country and an unofficial group, referring to Hamas.
