Social democrats to elect new chairman after parliamentary polls

The Egyptian Social Democratic Party will elect a new chairman three months after the end of the parliamentary elections scheduled between October 18 and December 4, the party’s current chairman, Mohamed Abul-Ghar, said in statements to Al-Masry Al-Youm. He added that he will not run again.

Abul-Ghar denied that there is weak competition for leading party positions, arguing that rivalry for the party’s supreme board is fierce. He noted that the party has decided not to organize its elections before the parliamentary polls “so as not to affect the chances of the party’s parliamentary nominees”.

His remarks came during the party’s general congress, which was held at the Journalists' Syndicate on Friday and was attended by 470 out of the 700 eligible voters.
