Supreme Press Council supports strike of live news coverage

Supreme Press Council Secretary-General Salah Issa said he agrees with Diaa Rashwan, chairman of the Journalists Syndicate, who called on all media and newspapers to refrain from covering live events after correspondents from Youm7 and a photographer from Sawt al-Balad were wounded inside Cairo University on Monday.

“The growing number of journalists injured in demonstrations proves those protests are not peaceful but as violent as wars,” Issa said. “Correspondents should be careful and photographers should film from a distance.”

Professor Hassan Mekawy of the Cairo University Faculty of Mass Communication blamed the Journalists Syndicate and all press institutions for failing to protect journalists. “They should give them protective vests and helmets,” he said, pointing to Mayada Ashraf, the young journalist who was killed while covering violent events.
