Tantawi meets with MPs prior to being questioned in Parliament

Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, head of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces on Tuesday met with People’s Assembly speaker Saad al-Katatny and the heads of the parliamentary committees prior to being questioned in Parliament over the security situation in Egypt.

Among the meeting’s attendees were deputy assembly speaker, Ashraf Thebet, head of the planning and budget committee Saad al-Husseini, head of the foreign affairs committee Essam al-Erian, head of the defense and national security committee Abbas Mekheimar and members of the SCAF including deputy head Sami Anan, state-run Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported.

The meeting discussed the Port Said football massacre, drafting the new constitution and the process for the power transfer to a civilian authority, MENA said.

MENA added that meeting participants also discussed ways to develop Egyptian foreign relations, stimulate the economy and encourage the return of security and discipline on the Egyptian streets.

Katatny on Sunday received 15 motions asking for the ministers of interior, finance, housing, petroleum, social insurance and justice to be questioned before the assembly.

The summons for investigation target Tantawi, Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri and Mohamed Ibrahim and include accusations of guilt in violence against protesters, armed robberies, murders of citizens and foreigners and the Port Said violence.

Independent newspaper Al-Tahrir's website said on Monday that Ganzouri told Parliament to set a date for questioning the three officials, but as of yet Katatny has not scheduled the session.

SCAF members have objected to demands that Tantawi be called before Parliament for investigation, Al-Tahrir said, adding that the objection was made during a Sunday meeting with Ganzouri, officials from the General Intelligence Directorate and the ministers of international cooperation, justice, foreign affairs, information and interior.
